Nachdem wir uns mit Dr. Jim Miller und Ian Koblick auf eine Übersetzung ihres Buches ‘Living and Working in the Sea’ ins Deutsche und insbesondere vom anglo-amerikanischen ins metrische Maßsystem geeinigt haben, können wir nun bekanntgeben, dass die Übersetzung inzwischen abgeschlossen ist. Momentan arbeiten wir an der Durchsicht und hoffen, in Kürze die Veröffentlichung beginnen zu können. Mit letzterem ist innerhalb der nächsten zwei Monate zu rechnen.

Die Autoren
Jim Miller und Ian Koblick sind Zeitzeugen der meisten Habitate der 60’er und 70’er Jahre. Ihre Erfahrung führte zum Bau eines der bisher fortschrittlichsten Habitate, La Chalupa. ‘Living and Working in the Sea’ ist die Dokumentation diese faszinierenden und historischen Zeit und eine Zusammenfassung ihrer Ergebnisse.

Diese kurze Geschichte des Tauchens erzählt über die frühesten Anstrengungen, Tauchzeiten jenseits normaler menschlicher Grenzen zu verlängern. Man erhält außerdem Einsicht in die Zukunft des Lebens unter Wasser – eine Zukunft mit Unterwasser-Hotels, Schulklassen und selbst wasser-atmenden Aquanauten. ‘Living and Working in the Sea’ umfasst alle Facetten der Herausforderung, unter den Meeren zu leben. Keine andere Einzelquelle ist umfangreicher oder detaillierter. Ozeanografische Ingenieure, Techniker, Wissenschaftler und Forscher, sowie Wissenschafts- und Sporttaucher werden sich wieder und wieder dieser Untersee-Bibel zuwenden.
Die Übersetzung ins Deutsche
Obwohl er dieses Buch immer wieder als erste Referenz zu Rate zog, stellte Mart eines Tages fest, dass es für Nicht-Amerikaner fast ausgeschlossen ist, das Buch fließend zu lesen. Das lag weniger an der Sprache, sondern eher an dem amerikanischen Maßeinheitensystem mit Zoll, Fuß und Pfund pro Kubikfuß. Die Übersetzung des Buchs ins Deutsche war daher anfangs eher ein privates Anliegen ohne den Hintergedanken, es eines Tages zu veröffentlichen. Mit dem Kontakt zu Books-On-Demand sah er jedoch plötzlich eine gute Gelegenheit, eine Veröffentlichung ohne einen großen Verlag anzustreben. So begab er sich auf die Suche nach den Autoren, die auch schnell gefunden waren, und traf Mitte August 2017 mit ihnen eine Vereinbarung zur Übersetzung und Veröffentlichung innerhalb dieses Jahres.
Um das Miniumum der Kosten zu decken planen wir eine Crowd-Funding-Kampagne mit niedrigem Ziel. Alle Unterstützer werden am Anfang des Buches aufgelistet, während eine weitere Seite für eventuelle Investoren reserviert wird. Das Buch wird eine ISBN-Nummer erhalten und über die meisten Online-Plattformen erhältlich sein, obwohl jede Kopie erst mit der Bestellung in Druck geht, dem sogenannten Books-On-Demand-System.

After agreeing with Dr. Jim Miller and Ian Koblick about the official translation of their ground-breaking book ‘Living & Working in the Sea’ from 1984 from English to German, and most important from the Anglo-American to the metric measuring system, we can now gladly announce, that the translation is finished and currently reviewed. Copies will be available within the next two months.
Jim Miller and Ian Koblick witnessed most of the undersea habitats of the 60’s and 70’s and were strongly involved in many of them. Their experience led to the construction of one of the most advanced habitats so far, La Chalupa. ‘Living and Working in the Sea‘ is a documentation of this fascinating and historical period and a summary of its results.
Amazon describes the book as follows:
A brief history of diving recounts the earliest efforts to extend submergence time beyond normal human limits. You also get a look into the future of undersea habitation – a future with underwater hotels, classrooms, and even water-breathing aquanauts. “Living and Working in the Sea” covers every facet of the challenge of living beneath the seas. No other single source on the subject is as comprehensive or detailed. Oceanographic engineers, technologists, researchers, and explorers, as well as scientific and sport divers will refer to this undersea “bible” again and again.
The translation to German
Though using the book as a number-one reference for several times, Mart noticed one day that it is nearly impossible for a Non-American to read the book fluently, not because of the language, but the Anglo-American measurement system with feet, inches and pounds per cubic-foot. Starting to translate the book to German and the metric system was more an act for himself than thinking of a publication. However, after getting into contact with the system of Books-On-Demand he suddenly saw a good chance to publish it without agreeing with a big publisher. So he found the two original authors and finally in the middle of August 2017 agreed with them to translate and publish the book within this year.
To cover the minimum expenses for publishing we plan a low-limit Crowd-Funding campaign. All contributors will be listed in the beginning of the book. Another page of the book will be reserved for a potential private supporter. The book will get an ISBN number and will be available over major online platforms, while the books will be printed singly after each order, a system called Books-On-Demand.
